Tra c Characterization and Switch Utilization using a DeterministicBounding

چکیده
Compressed digital video is one of the most important types of traac in future integrated services networks. It is dif-cult to support this class of traac since, on one hand, compressed video is bursty, while on the other hand, it requires performance guarantees from the network. The common belief is that we are unlikely to achieve a high network utilization while providing performance guarantees to such bursty sources. In this paper, we introduce a new De-terministic Bounding Interval-Dependent (D-BIND) traf-c model, together with tight analysis techniques, to explore the possibility of providing deterministic performance guarantees to VBR traac while still achieving a reasonable network utilization. The D-BIND model consists of a family of rate-interval pairs where the rate is a bounding rate over the interval length. The model captures the intuitive property that over longer interval lengths, a source may be bounded by a rate lower than its peak rate and closer to its long-term average rate. While the D-BIND model is a general deterministic model that can be used to characterize a wide variety of sources, in this study, we focus on MPEG-compressed video. Using two 10 minute traces, we demonstrate the eeectiveness of the new model and show that, contrary to common belief, reasonable network utilization can be achieved for compressed video, even when deterministic guarantees are provided.

متن کاملTime dependent priority scheduling for guaranteed QoS systems
With the advanc es in server technology, and the advent of fast Gigabit networks, it has become possible to support multi-media applications. To support the requirements for the transmission of isochronous data, the network must provide service guarantees to connections, including minimum bandwidth, packet delay, delay jitter, and loss. Three factors determine the utilization of the network whe...
متن کاملA Large Scalable Multicast ATM Switch with Input and Output Link Sharing
In this paper, we propose a novel design of a multicast ATM switch using input and output link sharing. Switch inputs and outputs are grouped into small modules called Input Shared Blocks (ISBs) and Output Shared blocks (OSBs), respectively. Link sharing among grouped inputs can solve output contention and avoid link starvation. Output link sharing eliminates the speedup requirement for the cen...
متن کاملAnalysis of shared buer switches under non-uniform trac pattern and global ̄ow control
Shared buer switches do not suer from head of line blocking which is a common problem in simple input buering. Shared buer switches have previously been studied under uniform and unbalanced trac patterns. However, due to the complexity of the model, it was not possible to fully explore the performance of such a switch, in the presence of a single hot spot. In this paper, we develop a new m...
متن کاملA Study on E cient Delay Distribution Methods for Real - time VBR Tra c Transfer
| Future packet switching networks should provide various services that require diverse levels of QoS(Quality of Service). Among these services, real-time VBR video tra c is thought to be di cult to meet QoS requirements because of its high burstiness. In this paper, we study an e cient delay distribution scheme that allocates the end-to-end delay bound into the end-station shaper and the netwo...
